Distress Ink Watercolor Backgrounds on Bristol

Hello Crafters! Awhile back I had a few friends recommend using Bristol paper with my Zig Clean Color Markers. I'd never tried Bristol paper before so I purchased some to give it a go. I didn't see a noticeable difference with the Zigs but I really loved how smooth the paper was vs the more textured look you get with traditional watercolor paper.

Plus, it's white, like bright white. Since I had a whole pack I decided to see if I could use it with other mediums. Of course I went directly to my distress inks. In rainbow colors, because it's always a good idea to have rainbows.

I created four different backgrounds using four different techniques. I was totally inspired by some watercolor tattoos I saw on Pinterest and the Modern florals were a perfect fit to recreate that look.

ou can see each background created in the video below.

Watch above or watch in HD at YouTube

I loved three out of the four but it was really my fault I didn't love number four. may or may not have gotten a little overzealous with my rainbow colors haha. Sometimes you should just stop adding color. I know, I was shocked too.

All of the techniques I would normally use of watercolor paper worked really well on the Bristol. Good news for me because I legit have an entire pack to use. I haven't tried copics on it yet but I have a feeling that's just around the corner.

Thanks so much for dropping by. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  3. Kelly, I would not even have noticed the "brown" you talked about in the one card you made! I don't think it is noticeable. However, I do know how you feel. Something WE each don't like in something we are making, it can be very distracting to ourselves! Your cards are lovely and thank you for using the Bristol paper.

  7. Love this idea, Kelly. I even liked "the spot" - beauty, after all, is in the eye of the beholder. Have you tried playing with this technique using Oxide Distress Inks? I think you'd love it!

  9. I love ALL these cards and the last one might just be my favorite! That spot doesn't bother me at all! I really enjoy your video style- so much fun to watch. Thank you and happy day!

  10. Your cards are great and I love this technique! I use bristol a lot and really like it for Zigs and for distress inks. I wonder if water would have lightened up the offending spot? I guess I would have just cut the panel down and used it. Your videos are so much fun and I always learn something new so thank you so much for all you share!!!

  11. Thanks for sharing these great techniques. I've recently been putting the distress inks on my acrylic block and misting with water to "stamp" on my paper (idea from Jennifer Maguire). What I like about your techniques is the greater control of color and freedom in shaping the colored areas. I'll be trying these today for sure.

  14. First I have to say that I could watch your videos forever. These cards are beautiful. I love the organic look, even if one does have a brown spot! 😊 Thanks Kelly for sharing your creations with us.

  15. wow! These are all gorgeous! I love Bristol paper but I haven't tried the "wet on wet" technique with my distress inks, so thanks for this inspiration! I am swooning over how fabulous the line-drawn flowers look partially overlaid on the watercolor. Now to go poke around your blog!
